The 6.1-inch Samsung Galaxy S22 is the smallest and most affordable model in the new Galaxy S22 series. Despite the smaller size, it offers the same high-end SoC performance as its more expensive cousins and is almost on par in terms of features. Furthermore, we see that it has improved a lot compared to its predecessor — the Galaxy S21.

Some would argue that the standard of flagship smartphones has been set so high for so long that the newest versions are only incremental improvements on their predecessors. If this is true, last years flagship smartphones are an increasingly good place to look for a decent camera phone, as their prices keep on dropping. Now that the Samsung Galaxy S22 is available for around $450 / £450 (or less, renewed!), this makes it incredible value for money, at roughly half the price when it was first released. It offers an impressive set of cameras, a good selfie camera with autofocus, and a flagship phone design, with all the features you’d expect on a flagship.

When recording video, the S22 does well in bright light and under indoor conditions. Its dynamic range is wide and like the best in class iPhone 13 or the S22 Ultra, the S22 is capable of capturing good highlight detail in difficult high-contrast scenes. Performance is less impressive in low light, though, with frequent highlight and shadow clipping. Color is generally nice with accurate white balance unless you record in low light. Noise is an area for improvement and is already quite intrusive in bright light videos. It becomes more problematic as the light gets dimmer. In this sample clip, we can see the Galaxy S22’s wide dynamic range, with good highlight retention in the bright window. The camera struggles a little with focusing on the people on the sofa. There is some focus breathing, and overall the S22’s video autofocus is not quite on the same level as the Ultra. Stabilization artifacts and frame shift can be observed as well. Noise is quite intrusive around the 40-sec mark, especially when there is motion and on areas of plain color, such as the walls.

I’ll be putting the Samsung Galaxy S22 and the Samsung Galaxy S22+ through more rigorous testing at a later date, but after having spent a short amount of time with the new phones, I must say I was impressed. Both pack high-end tech and clever AI into compact and sophisticated devices. So far I’m struggling to find any deal-breaking downsides, other than the lack of a MicroSD card slot and the fact that you’ll need to buy the charger separately. The only reason I wouldn't recommend buying one is if you just bought the Samsung Galaxy S21 because they aren't really different enough to justify it. For anyone else though, this is an excellent piece of kit. Although the Ultra is the cream of the crop, it’s these cheaper models that are likely to convince the most people.

The OLED screen is great, performance should be up there with the best and Samsung’s interpretation of Android 12 is easy to use and feature-rich. I do have some reservations, though. The battery is very small and even with the benefits of the efficient chip and screen I can’t see this getting through the day without some heavy sacrifices.
