A Dell okosan felosztotta az Alienware 17 sorozatát két külön változatra: az Alienware m17-re és az Alienware Area-51m-re. Míg a vékonyabb m17-et megfosztották egyes funkcióktól az eredeti 17-es sorozathoz képest, a nagyobb és full extrás Area-51m pótolja a hiányt. Az egykor nagy darab 17 hüvelykes Alienware sorozat most már olyan gamerek számára is vonzó lehet, akik a szálkásabb és vékonyabb notebookokat részesítik előnyben, valamint olyan gamerek számára, akik a lehető legnagyobb teljesítményt várják el a méretet szem előtt tartva.

Mivel az m17 lényegében egy  "zsírszegény Alienware 17", ezért az eredeti sorozat rajongói sajnálni fogják, hogy feláldoz egy maréknyi klasszikus Alienware funkciót, mindezt a vékonyság és könnyűség nevében. De még így is közel sem lett  annyira vékony és könnyű, mint az MSI, az Asus vagy az Acer legújabb modelljei, így az m17 inkább egy amolyan középút az ultravékony és a vastag és nehéz között. Másrészt, az m17 extra körmérete merevebb vázat eredményez, mint amilyen sok más szupervékony alternatívája, különösen a fedél tekintetében.

Legnagyobb panaszunk a CPU hőmérsékletre, a ventilátorzajra és a billentyűzetre vonatkozik. 98 C fokot elérő hőmérséklet annak ellenére, hogy a ventilátorok a leghangosabban pörögnek játék közben - ez sokaknak nehezen lenyelhető. Emellett a puha billentyű visszajelzés jobban illett volna egy vékony Ultrabookhoz, mint egy gamer notebookhoz, amilyen az m17. Az MSI és Clevo notebookok SteelSeries billentyűzetei határozottabb visszajelzést adnak egy szolidabb játékélmény érdekében. A "beveled" billentyűzet az Area-51m-en és a régebbi Alienware 17-en is szintén megfelelőbb a gamingre.

Az Alienware m17 hatalmas súly- és méretmegtakarítást kínál az Alienware 17-tel szemben. A hátrányok viszont szembetűnőek, beleértve több hardverfunkció kihagyását, és a Max-Q GPU-kra mozdulást. Szerencsére a klasszikusabb Alienware élményt igénylő felhasználók választhatják az Area-51m modellt, míg a márkát most először használóknak tetszeni fog az m17 a más ultravékony alternatívákhoz képest erős váz dizájn miatt.
