Coming in just under R4k, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 left me impressed. Unlike newer phones from Huawei, you here have a full Android experience with all the Google Apps working perfectly. The phone might be a bit sticky when it comes to performance, but for the most part the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 comes highly recommended.

But the phone’s top-end variant costs Rs 14,999 and seems expensive at this price point, especially when you compare it to the Poco M2 Pro and Realme 6, which offer better performance and features. Therefore, while the base variant is certainly a good bet, the top-end variants are hard to recommend.

In the end, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 does live up to its roots, but not up to my expectations nor to what Note owners have come to expect from this device. It still needs a lot more love (spit and polish) from the brand when it comes to software optimisation and gaming performance. Hopefully, these should be resolved with future updates (MIUI 12), but for now, they aren’t. If you have last year’s Redmi Note 8, there’s no good reason to upgrade. I would recommend the Note 9 only if all you care about is getting the best possible hardware at Rs 11,999 (and of course don’t prioritise gaming).

Poco M2 Pro is priced at Rs 13,999 (base model). Then there are phones from other rival brands like the Realme Narzo 10 and the Samsung Galaxy M21, which too could appeal to buyers in this segment.
