A Sonynak az Xperia XZ-vel kellett volna kezdeni a termékstruktúra átalakítását, és akkor senki sem kérdőjelezte volna meg, hogy az irányváltás helyes-e. A telefon kiválóan sikerült: dizájnja úgy frissült nagyot, hogy közben a sonys arculatot is sikerült megtartani. A hardver szintén erős, egyedül a 3 GB RAM-ba köthetünk bele. Végre a fényképező is vállalható, a szoftverrel pedig igazából eddig sem volt probléma, az Xperia XZ esetében sincsen. Egy nagy gond van: a telefon drága. No nem azzal van a gond, hogy 240 ezer forintba kerül (minden új csúcskategóriás mobil nagyjából ilyen áron kerül forgalomba), hanem azzal, hogy októberben kerül ennyibe. A riválisok februárban bejelentett kütyüi között sokkal olcsóbb alternatívákat találunk: a tudásban cseppet sem gyengébb Samsung Galaxy S7 például mostanság már csak 150 ezer forintba kerül, a Huawei P9 pedig még ennél is kevesebbért hazavihető. Egy gyors (és izmos) árcsökkenés tehát mindenképpen kell, ha a Sony labdába akar rúgni az Xperia XZ-vel.

The Xperia XZ has a nice, sexy form factor with its premium metal body and 2.5D glass implementation. Its 5.2-inch Full HD display is appreciated and makes operating with one hand fairly easy. One of my personal favorites is its dust- and water-resistant body that I could take with me on beach trips and the like. Performance-wise, we don’t have much complaints on the XZ as it was able to keep up with us during the entire week of using it as our primary phone. The implementation of USB-Type C is also well-appreciated as a sense of future-proofing the device.

As I mentioned, the Xperia XZ is a bit of a tough sell at $699. Sure it is flagship material, but it is also missing a great number of things that make other $699 smartphones worth the price. One is the display. A 1080p display is great for 5.2-inches, but not great for a price tag of $699. The other is the deactivated fingerprint scanner. With most smartphones, even budget ones that are under $200, coming out with fingerprint scanners, it’s tough to see why Sony opted to leave it out, at least not turn it on, with the Xperia XZ. Especially where it probably cost them more to leave the fingerprint scanner dormant on the US models, only.

If we compare it to the Xperia X, it can be said that Sony has made quite a few improvements to the Xperia XZ flagship. With a faster CPU and 4K support, it's certainly an impressive device, even if it lacks certain staples of flagship smartphones such as Quad HD display or even 4GB of RAM.

Sony has, since the inception of the Xperia range, boasted about “two day battery life” for practically every mobile device the Japanese company has launched. During the press briefing for the XZ, this was nowhere to be seen in the marketing material. In response to a question from a colleague, a Sony executive gave a slightly fluffy answer about the marketing material taking a “different direction”. The Sony Xperia XZ seems to marry the Z series and the X series together, which is what its name suggests, even if that wasn't the reasoning behind it.
