A ThinkPad E480 vonzó notebook erős alkatrészekkel, megfizethető áron. Ugyanakkor ne tévesszenek meg az elméleti adatok: a gyakorlati teljesítmény az, ami igazán számít.

Az E480 több olyan erénnyel rendelkezik, amelyek a mérsékelt árú ThinkPad mellett szólnak. Ide vehetjük a teljesen újratervezett, meggyőző minőségű házat. Emellett a beviteli eszközöket is, amely területen az E480 a többi ThinkPadhoz hasonlóan erős. A háttérvilágításos billentyűzet és a TrackPoint különösen jók. A touchpad ugyanakkor nem tökéletes, de a Windows drivereknek hála így is elég pontos. A csatlakozók esetében jó hír, hogy a Lenovo végre alkalmaz USB-C portot az E szériában is, főleg, mert az E480 így minden lehetséges csatlakozási lehetőséggel el van látva - kivétel ez alól a Thunderbolt. A gép bővíthetősége példás, mivel a két szabad RAM foglalat mellett még egy üres 2.5 inches hellyel is rendelkezik, amelybe HDD vagy SSD kerülhet. További pozitívuma a kijelző: nem kiemelkedő, de a matt IPS panel jó kontraszttal bír, és nincs komoly hiányossága - esetleg a színlefedettséget leszámítva, de ez ebben az árfekvésben normális.

Az E480 hibái leginkább a belsőjéből erednek, bár nem kizárólag abból. Zavaró például, hogy a Lenovo csak egy microSD olvasót használt, holott a teljes méretű is bőven elfért volna. Nagyobb baj, hogy a beépített SSD túl lassú egy PCIe-NVMe SSD-hez képest, egyes SATA III SSD is lenyomják. A legnagyobb probléma azonban a hűtőrendszer, amely képtelen kezelni az alkatrészek hőtermelését. Ez a mindennapokban előforduló teljesítményesésekből még nem feltétlenül válik egyértelművé, de az idegesítő ventilátorzaj, és az ennek ellenére elért 71.6 °C-os (160.9 °F) maximális hőmérséklet miatt igen. Ez utóbbi olyan magas érték, amelyet nem szívesen lát az ember notebooknál. Ehhez az esetleg sérüléseket is okozó negatívumhoz képest a többi - középszerű üzemidő, a telepről működve lefojtó GPU és a rövid jótállás - szinte elhanyagolható. 

El a kezekkel: ha nem akarjuk megégetni magunkat, kerüljük el a ThinkPad E480 AMD GPU-s konfigurációját.

Akármilyen jó is az ár/érték aránya, az E480-at ebben a konfigurációban nem ajánljuk. Igen, az extrém hőmérsékletet a stressz teszt során mértük, de a ház játék közben is hasonló mértékben melegedhet. Az E480 használata az AMD videokártyás változatban ellenjavallott a sérülésveszély miatt.

Ez a végszó nagyon sajnálatos, mivel az E480-ban van potenciál. Kifejezetten érdekes lenne látni, hogy egy AMD videokártya nélküli verzió hogyan teljesít - valószínűleg sokkal kevésbé melegedne a burkolata. Egy Intel UHD 620-as konfig esetleg ajánlható lenne belőle. Egy ilyen felszereltségű tesztpéldány egyébként már úton van hozzánk. Alternatív megoldásként érdemes megnézni más gyártók kínálatát, például a HP ProBook 440 G5-öt, vagy a Dell Latitude 3490-et.
