I like the Sony Xperia 1 III, I really do, but $1,299 makes it one of the most expensive flagships to ever grace the market. Granted, the handset offers plenty of storage, a unique camera system, and one of the best displays in the business, not forgetting its assortment of charging, multimedia, and other technologies. But at this price point, you have to compare the phone to its competitors, and it’s missing a few key things. 5G mmWave is a hit-and-miss feature depending on your market but it’s a futureproof addition you have to expect from this price bracket. Likewise, the camera’s low light and selfie capabilities are not quite up to scratch. The software is similarly hit and miss. With Google apps and a dedicated Assistant button, Sony keeps its version of Android close to Google’s vision. At the same time, the phone is loaded with Tidal, Call of Duty, Facebook, and more bloat that we’ve chastised other brands for in previous years. For customers looking for the best all-around flagship, the Galaxy S22 series or even Sony’s own cheaper Xperia 5 III is probably the better buy.

Sony Xperia 1 III review revisited: The good and bad over six months later

Over half a year since launch, there’s still a lot to love and gripe about with the Xperia 1 III. I still both love and have misgivings about the camera, software, and a number of the little features which ultimately stopped the phone from being a slam dunk recommendation at launch. And that remains the case today. All the other pros and cons we discussed in the original review also apply. The lack of mmWave 5G means the phone is less future-proof over six months down the line, especially in the US. The phone is also still sluggish to charge, and you’ll have to contend with some pre-installed bloatware too. On the positive side, performance is still solid, the battery easily lasts all day, and there’s a suite of multimedia features for audio, video, and gaming enthusiasts to sink their teeth into. However, the one detail that’s undoubtedly aged less well is the price. Sony has discounted the handset by $100 since its launch, but it still retails for a hefty $1,199 through official channels.

Announced in April, the Xperia 1 III is Sony’s latest flagship phone. Sony puts a lot of emphasis on the device’s imaging capabilities but with a Snapdragon 888 chipset, 6.5-inch 4K OLED display and 12GB of RAM the Xperia offers top-end specs all around. Content creators will also appreciate the microSD slot that can deal with cards of up to 1TB in capacity, as well as the dedicated shutter button. The rear camera uses a 12 MP sensor in the primary module, next to a 12 MP ultra-wide with a 16mm equivalent focal length. The tele module uses a fairly unique design that allows the phone to switch between a 70 and 105mm lens with f/2.3 and f/2.8 apertures, respectively. In video mode, you can record clips in 4K resolution and a range of frame rates from 24fps for a cinema-like look all the way up to 120fps for slow-motion effects. Touch on the Sony Xperia 1 III is quite accurate. When gaming, every area of the screen is responsive, and the general accuracy is good. It is quite smooth in all use cases such as browsing the web, scrolling in the gallery app, and playing video games. The device manages ghost touches well in both portrait and landscape modes. Judder is noticeable at 24 fps; but while no judder is noticeable at 30 and 60 fps, frame drops and stutters are visible at all frame rates. Despite some aliasing, the Sony Xperia 1 III nonetheless provides a pleasant gaming experience.

I can’t unequivocally say it’s the best smartphone camera, but, like its predecessors, it does things its own way, whether that’s the camera array, deeply customizable camera app or the slick, sharp 4K 120Hz screen. Does anyone need a 4K phone screen? I’m not sure, but Sony makes a better argument for it with its external display app. The Mk.III, with its almost matte finish, looks and feels more like Sony’s family of alpha cameras, or perhaps more accurately, its high-end RX point-and-shoots, and when most other phones are backed with glass or glossy plastic, I think the Xperia 1 III has its own unique charm. Barring the iffy selfie camera, the latest Xperia 1 doesn’t do anything poorly and if you have the patience and the skill to master it, the Mk.III can take some stunning shots.

If you are not put off by the high price - or you are a die-hard fan of the Xperia series - you will love this model. Everyone else will have to ask if what Xperia 1 III offers is worth $ 1299? Sony Xperia 1 III is one of the most expensive models of Sony smartphones so far - probably only Xperia PRO, costing an astronomical 2.5 thousand dollars had a higher price. Let's face it - there are many more affordable flagships from competitors on the market, which of course don't have some of the unique features of Xperia 1 III, but aren't inferior to Sony in terms of quality and capabilities. And a few hundred dollars in your wallet makes all the difference.

The Xperia 1 III is one of the most interesting phones I’ve tested this year. This isn’t a cookie-cutter flagship impersonating a Galaxy S21 in its attempt to earn a place among the best Android phones – it’s doing its own thing and I appreciate that a lot. It’s great to see features like the SD card slot and headphone jack kept in. Design-wise its also wonderfully unique featuring a notch and cut-out free screen alongside an atypically tall and narrow design. On top of this it’s fast, has a good camera and mostly fluid software. But, there are bits that aren’t a complete success. Some parts of the camera need improving and I’d like a brighter screen when outside. Still, even with these flaws this is the best Sony flagship in a long time and it shouldn’t be dismissed – even at its high asking price.

The third time is the charm, it is said, and this is at least true of the Sony Xperia 1 III, which is the third incarnation of Sony’s Xperia 1 series, which the Japanese company launched back in 2019. The new mobile patches on a few of the holes that the previous Xperia 1 models had compared to the competition, and also offers enough cool unique features – PS4 Remote Play and 360 Spatial Sound just to name a few – for, that Sony Xperia 1 III should objectively be a strong and serious competitor to the Android flagship models that currently dominates the market. What still scares many consumers away is Sony’s special camera solution, which is far more geared towards semi-professionals than the Snapchat and Instagram segment. This is also the case with the Xperia 1 III, but at least Sony has solved some of the software issues that plagued previous models (though not the automatic HDR feature that still teases), and the Basic mode of the Photography Pro app ‘ one should most regular users be able to figure out.

And then there's the battery, which is more disappointing than the Friends reunion. In light use, I was able to mostly get through a day. But on days where I played games or did a lot of photography, I needed to top it off by dinner time. In our CNET battery tests with continuous video playback in airplane mode, it lasted 16 hours, 12 minutes with the screen set to 60Hz, which is an OK time. When I ran the same test with the screen at 120Hz, it lasted 10 hours and 45 minutes. Not even remotely good.

As with any mid-range phone, there's a collection of compromises that come with the Xperia 10 III. Sure, there's enough power to offer a smooth experience and it will cope with the latest games, but it's not quite on par with those devices offering a step-up in hardware, often for around the same price or even less. The design and build definitely works in Sony's favour though: this is a premium looking and feeling device, with the waterproofing a definite bonus and something few rivals offer (except for Samsung). The camera also lets the Sony experience down. While the main camera is generally decent in well lit scenes and there's a proper zoom lens, the front camera and low-light shooting is weak, so it doesn't feel as versatile as you might hope. Overall, the competition is just a little too strong for the Sony Xperia 10 III to stand out. Unless you're sold on that water-resistant design and 21:9 display, you'll get more for your money elsewhere.

Buy an Xperia 1 III. It doesn't know the meaning of the word. By once again pooling the efforts of its different divisions, Sony has delivered a truly flagship handset. It has a sublime display, a set of cameras on par with more fine-grain control than most DSLRs, and a feature list longer than a post-Brexit passport queue. A bigger battery and 120Hz screen refresh rate even fix its predecessor's few missteps. As before, though, some might say screen specs like these are overkill in a phone. Not everyone knows the difference between aperture priority and exposure compensation, either. Apple and Samsung are arguably more novice-friendly, despite commanding the same hefty price premium for their top-spec handsets. Android fans who like their top-end tech to be easy to use might be better served by a Galaxy S21 Ultra. Still, if specs matter most, the Xperia 1 III has undeniable appeal.

Sony smartphones are weird – and in this context that's a compliment. Honestly that’s why I look forward to a new one every summer: with the exception of foldables, no other phone pushes the envelope quite like a Sony Xperia. No one else is cramming a screen this sharp and a variable telephoto camera into a water-resistant chassis tall enough to stand out in a crowd. No one else has a camera division with a pedigree quite like Sony’s. And no one else is going as far to blur the line between professional and phone photography. In the expanse of smartphones, the Sony Xperia 1 III (read as "one mark three") positions itself as a tool for photographers, filmmakers, audiophiles and gamers. This is Sony's third take on a phone targeted at creative types, and like a band on its third album, its ambitions only succeed some of the time. With a state-of-the-art telephoto lens made up of tiny moving lenses that can switch between two focal lengths, 5G support for the US, and a first-of-its-kind 4K high refresh-rate display, you have to wonder if Sony's trying to do too much and inadvertently mucking up what would otherwise be a magnificent phone? The fact that the Xperia 1 III costs $1,300 (which converts roughly to £940, AU$1,735) makes its shortcomings impossible to ignore.

The Sony Xperia 1 III is relatively pricey at 8,449 yuan ($1,334) for the 256 GB model and 9,499 yuan ($1,491) for the 512 GB model, but early sales numbers in China have reportedly been impressive, which perhaps isn’t surprising considering how much this phone stands out from the pack with its loud front-facing speakers, a headphone jack, a 4K/120Hz screen (although I can’t see the need for 4K, it’s more appealing on paper), and a dedicated camera shutter button. I didn’t get to use the phone long enough to test battery life, but its 4,500 mAh cell seems a bit small for a 4K/120Hz panel. But only further testing can tell definitively.
