The Galaxy A23 5G has made a significant price jump compared to its predecessor. More cameras, faster charging and a slightly more modern SoC are supposed to compenste for this. Is this enough, or are there better choices to be found in other inexpensive 5G phones?

Ám ha ezeket félretesszük, akkor is találunk okokat a Galaxy A23 5G mellett, például a bővíthető tárhelyet, a 3,5 mm-es csatlakozót, a 120 Hz-es PWM-mentes kijelzőt, vagy épp az optikailag stabilizált kamerát. De hiányzik a vízállóság, amit a Galaxy A33, a Sony Xperia 10 IV, vagy a Nokia X30 5G már ad, igaz drágábban. A kompaktság sem jellemző igazán a Galaxy A23-ra, ebben a Motorola Edge 30 Neo kínál jobb alternatívát, plusz ugye az eddig felsoroltakban OLED kijelző is található. Aztán ott van a Xiaomitól Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G vagy a Poco X4 Pro 5G, melyek lényegében megegyező készülékek kicsit más házban, de már AMOLED panelt, több RAM-ot és tárhelyet kínálnak az A23-mal megegyező árban. Olcsóbban pedig ott van a Realme 9 Pro, amiben ugyan semmi pro nincsen, de több memóriával és tárhellyel már százezer forint alatt is beszerezhető hivatalos forgalmazásból. De ha tavalyra is visszanézünk, a bajnok Galaxy A52s 5G-t még kifoghatjuk a kártyafüggetlen piacon, ahogy a Realme GT Mastert is a 100 - 130 ezer forintos ársávban, ha pedig nem ragaszkodunk az 5G-hez, akkor Xiaomi mobilok sora — de akár a Redmi Note 10 5G is—, a Motorola Moto G32 és Moto G60 is behúzhatók ennyiért. Így talán nem lepődik meg azon szerintem senki, hogy bár nem gondolunk rossz szájízzel a Galaxy A23-ra, plecsnit nem érdemel most tőlünk.

There is no water protection, no proximity sensor, no ambient light sensor, no 4K video capturing, and the screen isn't all that bright for an LCD - all these could be fixed by increasing your budget by a fraction. But if you can find the Galaxy A23 5G on sale for about €200 or lower, then it is going to be worth every penny as there will be no phone to beat it, stutter or no stutter.

The device showed impressive performance during idle phases, losing only 1% per night on average. On-the-go autonomy was excellent, especially when calling and using the camera. However, the device struggled when streaming videos, draining high discharge currents. The charging time was longer than average because of the small 25W charger. But the residual consumption of this power adapter was very low. When compared with devices from the same price range, the Samsung Galaxy A23 5G was just average, but its performance when calling and using the camera remained excellent.

But considering the price, the phone is not justified for the value you are going to pay. In fact, the Galaxy M23 smartphone provides a similar design while packing a much better chipset, and camera and even has 5G connectivity while costing a bit lower than that of the Galaxy A23. If you need all these features, the Galaxy M23 is a better alternative to buy for your money, but it doesn’t have a high refresh rate display as that of the Galaxy A23. So, you will have to make a decision based on what you need.

It's quite apparent that the Galaxy A23 isn't priced right. It has many competitors that are better equipped for the job, even ones that are a bit older - from last year. Even some home-grown competition is at hand. Sure, the Galaxy A23 snaps some pretty good photos during the day, and battery life is dependable, but that's not nearly enough to make it desirable. The display uses an IPS panel without an ambient light sensor, making things worse, the charging solution isn't competitive, the chipset drags behind most of the competition in terms of raw performance, the software is laggy, and the ultrawide camera is surprisingly even more underwhelming than initially expected. Perhaps within a couple of months or a year, the Galaxy A23 may become a bit more competitive, but with its current pricing, there are better options out there, that's for sure.

Okay, so let’s wrap up this review. Like I spoiled it at the very beginning, the Galaxy A23 is a… travesty. I guess you can argue that it has a few notable qualities like the attractive design, optimized software, and solid battery life, but they are heavily outweighed by the overall value of the phone in regards to its price. If you want a well-rounded phone in general, then the Redmi Note 11S and Realme’s Narzo 50 are a couple of great options in Nepal. And in the Indian market, the POCO X4 Pro 5G, Galaxy F23, Moto G71, and Realme 9 SE all offer a much better value than the Galaxy A23. What I’m trying to say is there’s simply no justifying this travesty of a phone. Maybe Samsung already has a cheaper ‘M’ or ‘F’ series rebrand ready for the A23. But even then I doubt it’ll be able to match the competition with its price-to-performance ratio.
