Microsoft Surface Book 3 (15)’s display has a touchscreen IPS panel (LP150QD112604) with a very high resolution (near 4K), comfortable viewing angles, very good contrast ratio, and 92% sRGB coverage. Its factory calibration is pretty decent, but when our Gaming and Web design profile is applied, the color-accuracy improves even further to a standard-matching level. This makes it usable for Web design, creative work, and e-commerce. However, our particular unit suffered from a severe non-uniformity in the top right corner, which declassifies it for the aforementioned workflow, should you desire perfection. On the bright side, the panel doesn’t use aggressive PWM so it’s generally safe for work.

A slightly thicker Surface Laptop 3 with a good GPU would appeal to most of the developers and creatives at which Microsoft is trying to aim this machine. The Surface Book 3 offers a few hardware upgrades, but its unique design is clearly holding it back against more powerful competitors. It’s still a compelling option for creatives, but be aware there are far faster machines for the same price.

Microsoft’s Surface Book 3 attempts to be all things for all people: the PC you create with during the day, and the laptop you relax with at night. Honestly, Microsoft’s vision of a big, beautiful workstation/tablet/gaming PC/productivity machine has always deeply resonated with me. It's hard to find a gaming PC with such an excellent keyboard, or a productivity laptop with such a powerful GPU inside. All of this is elegantly wrapped, with the Surface bow on top. This is Microsoft’s premier PC experience.

It's been about 2.5 years since the Surface Book 2, Microsoft's laptop that tries to be all things to all people; it's a clamshell, a convertible and a detachable, where most laptops settle for two out of three. Even after all that time, the Surface Book 3 gets a mostly run-of-the-mill refresh, launched along with a brushed-up version of Microsoft's tiniest tablet, the Surface Go 2: 10th-gen Intel processors with the accompanying memory improvements, current-generation Nvidia GTX graphics, upgrade to Wi-Fi 6 and a bump to 10Gbps USB-C from 5Gbps.
