Sure, the Flex 5 isn't perfect. The display isn't nearly as bright as I'd like, although it's fine for regular indoor use. Also, the pen storage design is just not good. I don't want to call it terrible because there are worse ways of doing it, but it's annoying. You have to remove the pen just to press the power button or to plug in a peripheral. And the thing is, the pen is docked exactly when I want to plug in a peripheral, when I'm at my desk.

The Lenovo Flex 5G is a device hindered by compromises. The laptop hardware itself is fine, but not as spiffy or appealing as a $1,499 laptop should be. Lenovo’s display is great inside, but falters outdoors due to the glossy glass. While the keyboard is excellent, and augmented by truly useful shortcut keys, the touchpad is average and the ports are limited. Performance is where the Flex 5G really shines. All-in-all, this is a really great PC, with a pretty 1080p display, a nice and quiet keyboard, and cellular connectivity. It's just a mid-range laptop with flagship pricing, and that couldn't be more evident than by the fact that it doesn't ship with a pen, or that you can't configure it with more than 8GB RAM. I love Windows on ARM PCs for a lot of reasons, so it pains me to say this, but I really don't feel like I can recommend the Flex 5G.

So, the Intel version of this laptop is having a lot of struggles. The most prominent one comes from the cooling solution – especially when you have the GeForce MX330 onboard. During gaming (and with the “Extreme performance” profile applied) we saw the temperatures to not only creep up but maintain at 93C on the GPU and 97C on the processor. And if you choose the more forgiving “Intelligent cooling” profile, you end up losing performance. By the way, introducing a cooling pad drastically improves the thermals of the notebooks, as it appears that the design of the device is not optimized for airflow. So, at the end of the day, it might just be a better choice to pick the Intel Core i7-1065G7 only with its integrated graphics. Or just go for the AMD options, as they will provide a lot more headroom for productivity.

Ladies and gents, today, we introduced you to a beastly little convertible called the IdeaPad Flex 5 (14″, 2022). Although it was equipped with an older AMD processor, we can’t say that it was a failure. Quite the opposite in fact. Its fantastic dual-heat-pipe cooling solution produced a heroic and managed to give the Ryzen 5 5500U (in our case) the maximum possible headroom we’ve ever seen. And we’ve tested this processor with substantially bigger laptops too. Unfortunately, its memory is soldered to the motherboard, which is not great for future-proofing your laptop. Another nail in the imaginary coffin of this device is the 16GB maximum configuration. Yes, this is plenty, but there is no guarantee that you won’t need 32GB for something a bit more intensive in the future. Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 (14″, 2022)’s IPS panel has a WUXGA resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. Its backlight doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment, which is great. However, it covers only 54% of the sRGB color gamut, which essentially means that you miss half of the colors found on the Web. In addition, the glossy surface makes it pretty hard to work outdoors, as the maximum brightness is not high enough to compensate. Obviously, there is the 100% sRGB option you can pick, but its maximum brightness is still pegged at 300 nits. What is not limited, though, is the use of SD cards. Yes, this convertible has an SD card reader. This makes it great for photographers, who can edit their pictures on the go. Well, if they are willing to sacrifice color grading (in the case of our configuration’s display). At the end of the day, the laptop is really comfortable to use. Its keyboard and touchpad are good, but its dedicated Pen is amazing. For one, it sits as a further turn-on for the photographers we just mentioned.

With the AMD Ryzen 5000 hardware inside, the Flex 5 is one of the most powerful 14-inch budget laptops you can get right now. It's also a convertible and doesn't compromise on the build quality, inputs, audio, IO, or battery life, but it does come with one major deal-breaker: a dim and washed-out display with a 60% sRGB panel. That's just not for me and I'd rather pay extra or even sacrifice on the performance just to get a usable display instead. You, however, might feel otherwise, and if that's the case, you'll hardly find a better value laptop in this class. My entire experience with this notebook is documented down below.

As far as affordable laptops go, the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 is a good choice. While the dim display is disappointing, it was a joy using this laptop. I had no problems surfing the web no matter how many tabs were open, and I could rely on the long battery life to keep me entertained throughout the day. And while it’s made mostly of plastic, the Flex 5 still looks and feels like a sleek, sturdy device that’s well worth the investment. That is if you can find it in stock. Unfortunately, Lenovo appears to have discontinued this laptop, and pricing from third-party retailers varies wildly. If you’re not into hunting down your preferred configuration or can't find a good deal on the Flex 5, check out the similarly priced HP Envy 13 x360.
