Chromebooks have a reputation as low-power devices tied to online services, and to an extent that’s still true, in that you’ll get the best from one if you sign into Google’s cloud offerings and use web apps. However, the new range of Chromebook Plus machines offers more, including Android compatibility and AI in the form of the Gemini chatbot, and Acer’s Chromebook Plus 514 brings all this in a chunky plastic shell with a keyboard that’s great to use and isn’t going to goad you into typing ripe language. Overall, it’s a successful budget laptop, but not one that’s going to appeal to power users.

Acer has delivered the core things you need to in order to build a great Chromebook experience and they’ve done it on a wildly-low budget while throwing in a few unexpected upgrades along the way.
