I've used a few ZTE devices over the last few years and I've come to respect what ZTE is capable of and the price at which they pull it off. While some of the earlier ZTE devices I looked at were aimed squarely at the budget market, the Axon steps up a notch and enters the market at the crowded mainstream. It’s got a good screen, is a quick device when it works, and has some nice extra features, such as the pressure-sensitive touch screen. But having experienced performance issues and finding myself still confused by the phone's downright strange design, I can’t really say it’s worth going with ZTE over better-known brands. I can’t think of why you would choose the Axon Mini over say the OnePlus X. ZTE’s device is slightly more expensive than the OnePlus, and if my experience is anything to go by, sometimes it won’t even work.

The Mini packs a lot of tech, impressive on paper but not so much in real life. Force Touch – great, but unresponsive and unnatural-feeling; fingerprint scanner – awesome, but not quick or reliable; iris scanner and voice unlock – clunky and impractical; 13 MP camera sounds great, but performs worse than some cheaper handsets we’ve reviewed. The 3GB of RAM is also good to see, as is 32GB of storage. The main thing I feel that lets down the phone is the processor, it isn’t a deal breaker, but having a better processor would seem more appropriate alongside all those extra features.

The OnePlus 3 and Alcatel Idol 4s are both worthy alternatives — the former for its whopping 6GB of RAM, the latter for its bundled-in VR headset — and both offer better battery life. Regular readers know I place a lot of emphasis on value in my reviews (I'm not going to judge a $400 phone the same way I do a $850 phone, and I think phones that cost north of $700 should be scrutinized. That's why I thought the HTC 10 was a pile of "meh"), so whatever minor nitpick I have, such as a less-than-stellar low light camera performance or silly gesture shortcuts or no backlight for capacitive buttons that are too close together, I just tell myself "dude this phone is $400," and I don't think it's bad at all.

The all-metal build that carries over to the front-facing speakers has caught more than a few eyes when using in public, and the screen of this phone is a thing of sheer beauty. While the ZTE Axon 7 Mini costs $100 less than its larger sibling and has the same premium build quality, it makes a number of compromises to reach its lower price point. Many of the things we love about the Axon 7, like its Quad HD display, Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, big battery, and dual-band Wi-Fi are all absent here. Rather than looking at it as a "mini" version of the Axon 7, you should instead look at the Axon 7 Mini as an entirely different phone. Ultimately, it's up against other midrange options like the Moto G4 and the Life One X2, both of which offer similar performance for $100 less. The G4 is a particularly compelling alternative since it has a cleaner UI and support for all major US carriers. If you're looking for a truly compact phone that doesn't compromise on its specs, the Google Pixel is your best option, but it costs twice as much. Most people will still get the best combination of price and performance by paying $100 more for the Axon 7, which remains our Editors' Choice.

The design is visually attractive, but the sharp, narrow rail along the edge digs into your hand. The curved screen also doesn't do any favors for the hand-feel. This phone would also get a higher score were it not for the lacking 5G support in the US. One 5G band is better than none, but the lack of wireless support makes me feel like this is not a long-haul device. Carriers are going to be investing heavily in 5G going forward, and this phone will barely benefit.

The S21 is a very different form-factor phone, so not exactly quite the same comparison device, you’d have to compare it to the S21+, which at currently $899 and 1049€ is far outpricing the Axon 30 Ultra. While my experience on myOS on the Axon 30 Ultra has been fine and the phone received a couple of software updates since I got it, generally it would be wise to go into considering the phone with low expectations for much future significant udpates. In general, the Axon 30 Ultra was overly positive for me, and was a breath of fresh air in the flagship landscape. While the phone has weaknesses, it’s priced quite fairly, so it makes me look forward to ZTE’s next iteration.

I absolutely love that ZTE is working out the kinks for its under-display selfie camera. It’s incredibly joyful to look at the screen and not have your eyes immediately roam to a hole-punch cutout of any kind. And the quality itself is still much better than what Samsung packed into the Galaxy Z Fold 3. ZTE’s definitely leading the pack here, and we’re excited to see it adopted in future devices. But there’s always an elephant in the room, and the ZTE Axon 30’s stiffest competition comes straight from Google. The Pixel 6 is priced at $100 more (without any deals), but brings Android 12 out of the box, an IP68 rating, wireless charging, and a striking design. Sure, you’ll have to “deal” with a hole-punch cutout, but it’s really not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. ZTE is definitely on the right track as the Axon 30 is still a competitive phone with a competitive price. Performance is just as good as you would hope, and even the camera system will get you by in most situations. It’s just the rest of the package that leaves us wanting more.

I am impressed with all the improvements ZTE has made with the Axon 30 5G. There are some significant improvements with the second-generation under-display selfie camera. But along with that, they have improved pretty much every single gripe or annoyance from the Axon 20 5G. I like the new hardware design language and despite being a large device how lightweight it feels in the hand. The display is better, brighter, with an improved touch sampling rate and a smaller chin. There is a better processor and storage is now UFS3.1. Battery life is still good and now there is 65W fast charge support. Software is better and there is 5G connectivity out of the box. In summary, all the little tweaks and changes result in a markedly improved user experience. If you are not a big selfie camera person and want an uninterrupted display for under $500 then the Axon 30 5G should be near the top of your shopping list.

One could live with the aforementioned aspects; however, the large deal-breaker is the unsatisfactory power efficiency of the panel. At 423nits brightness, the phone uses 2.87W of power, which is significantly worse than Samsung Display OLED panels (S20U – 2.4W, S21U, 1.8W) Much like the many phones that got ruined by inefficient displays in the past, it also looks like the Axon 30 is also suffering from a larger battery life hit due to the display. Given the choice of a UDC with an inefficient screen, or a hole-punch with an efficient screen, I’d always choose the latter. Overall, I think the Axon 30 is an interesting phone, but I can’t help feel it’s still more of an immature technology showcase rather than a refined product. I think the Ultra sibling is still a much better phone, but at least ZTE is pricing the Axon 30 at a quite reasonable level.

Every year it feels increasingly strange that ZTE continues to try to compete at the near flagship level. Its OS is getting better, but it’s still incomplete and filled with random software instead of a smooth experience. Considering the battery issues I faced last year, I wasn’t expecting great hardware this year, but the Axon 40 Ultra feels great in my hand. The screen could be better, but overall it’s passable. The camera is pretty fun, and I love that 35mm focal length for photography. I’d like to see more companies adopt something similar in the future. The under-display camera, on the other hand, is terrible and ZTE should probably give that up. You can pre-order the phone from ZTE for $799 USD (roughly $1,000 CAD).

Another year, another Axon Ultra is challenging the established ways of doing smartphone cameras. The signs were there last year, but we may have overlooked them - now, ZTE has abandoned caution and has gone for a 35mm primary camera. And we can't say we're not fans. 35mm smartphone cameras from the early days were limited, but there were no ultrawides back then - today, there's always the zoom-out button for when stepping back isn't possible. And the Axon's main camera, thanks to its unusual specs, opens up possibilities you don't get anywhere else or not to that extent - mostly in real, actual lens blur, but also perspective. The Axon's other two cameras are properly good too, especially during the day, but not too shabby in the dark either. It's only in certain aspects of video recording that we saw missteps, but judging by the rate of updates we've been getting, they should be addressed sooner rather than later. There'll be no fix for the under-display selfie camera whose biggest virtue is its invisibility - certainly not its image quality.

If you don’t care about the selfie camera, it’s probably already high up on your list thanks to that stellar display. Coming in at €829 though, it’s a pretty tall ask when there are smartphones with a lot of the same features and better cameras for a lot cheaper. For example, in Europe, you can save €80 and get the Realme GT 2 Pro, a phone that honestly offers a lot more. You get a longer support window, much better cameras, the same charging speed, better software, and a much nicer QHD+ LTPO display. The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra’s best selling point is the display, but even that a lot of people likely won’t care about and falters behind the display tech of a cheaper phone. A friend of mine saw the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra and thought it was cool, but pointed out that the front-facing camera on their phone doesn’t bother them because it’s in the center of the status bar anyway. To be honest, I completely see where they’re coming from.

ZTE might not be a brand you’re familiar with here in the U.S., but they’re pretty well known globally. It’s a shame that we actually don’t have more devices here to choose from other than your usually Apple or Samsung phones, which pretty much dominate here. The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra really is a great device that has a lot going for it in terms of specs and usability. The cameras for the most part are fantastic and the display is gorgeous even though it’s only FHD+. The under-display front camera is very well hidden and really does make the display look that much better. The only thing I’d really ding the phone is the lack of waterproofing or dust proofing certifications and that the glass isn’t Gorilla Glass or equivalent. Also so lackluster selfie cam quality. However, I’m able to turn a blind eye to some of its shortcomings mainly because the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra will retail at an astonishing $799 globally, in this configuration, when it is released on June 21, 2022. That undercuts many of today’s flagships. Not only that. It still comes with a charger!

The OnePlus 10 Pro ($899) might be another device you should consider in lieu of the Axon 40 Ultra. It doesn’t have an under-display selfie camera and costs $100 more, but you’re getting perks like wireless charging, a good primary camera, a superior screen, and three years of OS updates. It also shares a few of the Axon 40 Ultra’s strengths such as battery life, fast charging, and the same powerful processor, though it’s a little rough around the edges due to the similarly lacking IP rating (unless you buy from T-Mobile), mediocre supporting cameras, and some software inconsistencies. You should also keep the iPhone 13 ($799) in mind if you’re open to joining the Apple ecosystem. It lacks a high refresh rate screen, has a massive notch, lacks a telephoto camera, and misses out on fast charging (and the charger). However, Apple’s phone also brings a powerful processor, IP68 rating, wireless charging, and access to an exclusive ecosystem.

I’m impressed enough with the design of the Axon 40 Ultra that I’d recommend the phone on that alone. The material, shape, and notch-less screen are big enough selling points on their own that make the phone very pleasant to use. The Snapdragon muscle and great battery life are the cherry on top. It’s not a perfect phone, though, with a camera that lags behind the competition and an update policy that doesn’t have the track record of what you’ll get from a Samsung phone. But even with those complaints, it’s one of the most appealing phones I’ve reviewed in a while, and anyone that’s looking for a well designed phone could do much worse than what ZTE’s got on offer. If you’re interested in jumping on the Axon 40 Ultra early, ZTE is offering a promotion where you can put down a $1.99 pre-order to knock $50 off the phone’s $799 list price. That entry model is the 128/8GB variant, but ZTE is offering a some steps up if you need more.

Egy ARM Cortex-A77 architektúrán alapuló, akár 3,2 GHz-es órajelen működő Prime Core magot integrál. Három további teljesítményű mag szintén az A77-en alapul, de legfeljebb 2,42 GHz-es órajelen. Ezenkívül négy energiatakarékos magot is integráltak, amelyek az ARM Cortex-A55 architektúrán alapulnak, és legfeljebb 1,8 GHz-es órajelen működnek.

SD 8 Gen 1:

2021 végén bemutatott, okostelefonokba szánt csúcskategóriás SoC, amelyet a Samsung 4 nm-en gyárt. Integrál egy, akár 3 GHz-es órajelen működő ARM Cortex-X2 architektúrán alapuló "Prime Core"-ot. Három további teljesítményű mag az A710-en alapul, de legfeljebb 2,5 GHz-es órajelen működik. Ezenkívül négy energiatakarékos magot is integráltak, amelyek az ARM Cortex-A510 architektúrán alapulnak, és legfeljebb 1,8 GHz-es órajelen működnek. A processzormagokon kívül a SoC egy WiFi 6e modemet, egy Hexagon DSP-t (az AI gyorsításhoz) és egy Spectra ISP-t is integrál. Az integrált memóriavezérlő támogatja a gyors, akár 3200 MHz-es LPDDR5 memóriát. Az 5G már a Snapdragon X65 modemmel került a chipbe.
