There’s much to like about Lenovo’s compact Chromebook. It’s easy to manage and solidly built, with fast wireless connectivity and a significantly brighter and more colourful screen than you’re going to find on most Chromebooks at this price. The Intel Core i3-N305 isn’t as speedy as a more conventional Core i3, but give it 8GB of RAM to work with and it’s not going to slow you down in everyday work. What’s more, it has stamina to spare. Were it not for the slightly chunky design, the less than stellar keyboard and the lack of extra USB-C ports, I’d pitch it as one of the best cost-conscious Chromebooks you can buy. As is, it’s still fantastic value, provided you can live with some minor issues here and there.

Reviews like these are tough to sum up. For the price of $319, you’re getting a computer with a pretty decent display, nice webcam, great battery life, pleasant keyboard, and nice speakers. It’s a nice computer in those respects with some aspects punching above the price tag. However, features like those mentioned above don’t mean much if the performance is bad. It doesn’t matter if the speakers are nice if navigating to the music player is a pain each time. Those features do well to enhance an already strong performance; they don’t make up for poor performance, however. I understand that the MediaTek processor is a more cost-effective offering and it lent to the battery performance, but the software experience was plagued from the start. I think that the performance of a brand-new computer shouldn’t be this bad, no matter how affordable it is. When you part with money for a new computer, no matter how economical it is, you’re still paying for a device that performs specific tasks. If it shows that it can’t perform those tasks, then what’s the point?

The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 is a perfectly serviceable Chromebook. Although it’s not the most innovative laptop I’ve ever worked with, it’s still a good value buy, especially if you’re a student or young professional. It has enough power for light use and the battery will keep you going long after your workday ends. The inclusion of a 1080p touch display is a nice feature to have on a sub-$400 laptop. Performance could be a touch snappier, but that’s just my own personal nitpick. You’ll need to taper your expectations some, especially as this machine has only 4GB of RAM. If you need an inexpensive everyday machine, then the IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook is worth your hard-earned cash.

Of course, with a budget Chromebook, some limitations are inevitable. The Slim 3 only comes with 4GB of RAM, and while the Kompanio 520 chip is a step up from its predecessor (the Kompanio 500 found in the original Chromebook Duet), you’ll start noticing lags if you’re pushing it too hard. If you keep your tasks limited and try to stick to one or two things at a time, it offers a nice, smooth experience. The big benefit is battery life, which looks to easily pace at the 13-hour mark Lenovo touts for this device. These types of caveats are fine in a $319 Chromebook, they are not even worrisome on a device that continues to be on sale for $169. At that sort of price, the Slim 3 is an absolute steal. If by the time you are reading this post you see it elevated back to the full MSRP and you are ready to get one, I’d tell you to hold off if possible: the track record on this one makes me think it will be on sale a lot.
