You know, when you first see a 17-inch laptop with bezels so thin, you just can’t help but marvel at the engineering miracle you’re seeing. Combine this with the fact that that said display can run at 600 nits of maximum brightness and you can barely notice there are any bezels around it. However, as with the 15-inch model, there is something fundamentally wrong with Dell’s offering. And you have guessed it right – the base version of the device. You just can’t offer a Core i5-10300H model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage (no matter how fast it is) and put it at $1450. And if you want to get the next option, which includes the more powerful Core i7-10750H and the GTX 1650 Ti, you need to spend $600 more (yet you get double the memory and the storage). And things really get out of control if you want the 4K display, which will set you back a total of $2900.

An entry-level Dell XPS 17 with an Intel Core i5 processor and integrated graphics starts at $1,599.99, but the laptop we tested here retails for $2,799.99. That’s a lot for a machine with so-so performance and ho-hum battery life. Apple’s MacBook Pro 14 has an edge. It delivers way better battery life and improved performance in many situations, though the Dell XPS 17 will lead in gaming. We can understand why some people don’t quite get why the XPS 17 even exist. It’s arguably a “niche” laptop that’s easily outperformed by 17.3-inch gaming laptops and on the face of it, it’s “only” one-inch larger than 16-inch laptops. To sum up, if you want to pack the largest screen you can into the sleekest laptop possible, and spend a big chunk of time running Adobe apps, it would be pretty hard to beat the XPS 17 9710 . Sure, that’s definitely a niche, but it’s not a bad niche to be in.

It’s slim and relatively light, has a premium, rigid unibody aluminum design and performance verging on gaming laptop territory. This refresh has Intel 12th gen Alder Lake H series CPUs, NVIDIA RTX 3050 and RTX 3060 dedicated graphics options and upgradable RAM and storage. There are2 display options, both being 6:10 aspect ratio and 500 nit: full HD and 4K wide gamut touch. This is a creator laptop for Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Blender and more, though of course it can handle some gaming too. It’s closest competitors are the 17” Razer Blade and 16” MacBook Pro.

It’s way too much computer if you are just doing a bit of web browsing, word processing, or other lightweight tasks – as the smaller Dell XPS 13 has more than enough power and is much lighter. But it’s falling behind, with slower creativity performance than many other 17-inch laptops, and it’s saddled with older technologies like a 720p webcam and wireless connectivity that’s a generation behind. It’s also expensive, rivaling the much stronger MacBook Pro 16 depending on the configuration. If you’re looking for a 17-inch laptop, then the XPS 17 remains a viable choice. But it’s no longer the class leader that it once was.
