Some could accuse Dell of resting on its laurels, but the Dell XPS 15 (2022) remains one of the best premium laptops around, particularly if you can afford to splash out on a model with the gorgeous OLED screen. While the power-constrained GPU means it’s not as good for gaming as the specs suggest, it’s more than fast enough for anything and everything beyond that. Most of all, it’s great to use. If you’re in the market for a high-end Windows portable, put the Dell XPS 15 high on your shortlist.

Finally, since the two laptops share the same Core i7-12700H, their CPU-bound performance is pretty much the same. However, the RTX 3060 in the XPS 17 translates to a significant increase graphics performance over the XPS 15. If you’re looking for a laptop that can pull double duty as a work machine and an occasional gaming system, the XPS 17 will better perform that role than the XPS 15, so long as you don’t mind lugging around a heavier laptop. Potential buyers should also take note that the XPS 17 costs significantly more than the XPS 15. The XPS 17 starts at $1849, but our review unit is priced at $3049. Those considering picking the XPS 17 over the XPS 15 for the RTX 3060, might want to think twice about whether the bump in graphics performance is worth the additional cost. Nonetheless, so long as you have the cash, we don’t think you can go wrong with either system and both are fairly priced in comparison to similar premium (operative word) options in the market currently.

The Dell XPS 15 (2022) has a lot of plus points. The 3.5K OLED touch screen on my review configuration and the speakers -- standard on every configuration -- are excellent, and the build quality is exemplary. There are plenty of configurations, and, if budget allows, the ability to specify 4TB of storage (2TB in the UK) is impressive. And yet, for such a high-end laptop, the 720p webcam is disappointing, and Dell could have helped users with legacy gear by including on-board HDMI and USB-A ports. However, if these issues are of no concern, then maybe the Dell XPS 15 (2022) is indeed the Goldilocks of the XPS world.

The Dell XPS 15 9520 delivers the goods for content creators with its rugged and beautiful enclosure, stunning OLED display, and competitive performance with the latest Intel silicon and GeForce RTX graphics. It may be a tad too heavy for regular commuting, but office workers looking for a productivity machine with a high design and roomy display will also find lots to like about the XPS 15 9520. Given that it’s probably not making daily commutes, however, I wish Dell bumped the display up to a 16-inch 16:10 panel. The RTX 3050 Ti graphics aid its multimedia capabilities but are of limited use for 3D gaming. If you are devising a way to package a work laptop and gaming laptop into one, you’ll need to look elsewhere. You’ll likely be able to find another laptop with a higher-end RTX GPU for less than the cost of our RTX 3050 Ti-based test model, but you’ll need to sacrifice the OLED panel and settle for a lower screen resolution than the 3.5K resolution that our XPS 15 9520 provides.

I think the biggest reason not to get the Dell XPS 15 is if you want a productivity machine. That’s what U-series processors and integrated graphics are for, and something like a Dell XPS 13 would actually serve you much better than an XPS 15 would.
