The Dell Venue 8 is a good-looking tablet which feels very well made, and has the advantage of the full version of Windows 8.1, so you have access to thousands of Windows applications. However, we're not happy with its screen; if you're after a Windows 8.1 tablet, the Lenovo Miix 2 8 tablet has a better panel and is significantly cheaper.

The Dell Venue 8 Pro is certainly a capable tablet and coupled with a stand and keyboard it can be a capable budget laptop as well. It comes with a full version of Windows and the inclusion of Microsoft Office is a good bonus. At AED 1299 in some shops here in the UAE it’s not too far off similarly priced Windows tablets and definitely easier to handle than some.

Overall, we were impressed that a fully working PC can be squeezed into such a light and compact device as the Venue 8 Pro, but we also wonder who the exact target market is for these 8in Windows tablet devices. The form factor makes it too small to be useful for any serious productivity work, while anyone looking for a consumer tablet for web browsing and watching videos is likely to prefer an iPad or Android device. That said, a device such as this could be viewed as a companion to a full size PC or laptop, which the price point of £249 is in keeping with. In this case, the bundled copy of Microsoft Office could prove useful.

Microsoft has finally given manufacturers the green-light to develop sub-10in Windows 8.x tablets. Dell is aiming to capitalise on this by offering the Venue 8 Pro, a device chocked full of business features. Dell proves there is life in 8in Windows 8.x devices. There are advantages to having a small tablet which can support all Windows applications, but the screen and specification could be better.

If you are intent on buying a 8-inch, Windows 8.1 tablet then the Dell Venue Pro 8 is currently the best one out there. It's comfortable to use, has a nice, bright display, the battery life really impresses and general performance is very good. For £250, it represents great value for money as a standalone tablet you are going to use for everyday tasks. We still have our niggling issues most of which are levelled at the operating system more than anything else. Until Microsoft sort out scaling issues for the traditional desktop mode, Microsoft Office is difficult to use without an additional keyboard. That means investing more pushing the price closer to £300 if you go for Dell's official option.

Bottom line here, the Dell Venue 8 Pro appears to be a decent value for the asking price. We do have to admit though, we struggled a bit to find a place where it truly fits in our work flow. Granted, that is just one specific person, so we have to discount that thought a little bit. If you are living in a Windows world, whether it be for work or pleasure, the Venue 8 Pro could be a viable alternative as compared to your basic Android or iOS tablet.

The Dell Venue 8 Pro is much easier to recommend than older Atom tablets. It can actually perform multimedia tasks in a reasonable amount of time, but still manages to excel at battery life. It fits easily in the hand, and is more portable than the 10-inch tablets we've seen up until now. It's got a much better screen than the muddy one on the 8-inch Acer Iconia W3, so it's easier on the eyes. That said, while recommended for ultramobile users who don't need a lot of local storage, the Dell Venue 8 Pro doesn't quite earn an Editors' Choice for two reasons: The Venue 8 Pro's base model is still a bit short on storage, and we haven't seen enough 8-inch Windows tablet competitors to unequivocally award the Venue 8 Pro an EC.

For those wanting a highly portable tablet that features the full Windows 8.1 operating system, the Dell Venue 8 Pro is a solid choice. Performance is quite surprising thanks to the new Atom processor and its size means that it can be held with one hand much better than larger 10-inch tablets. Even the limited storage can be dealt with thanks to the microSD card slot.
