There is no denying the fact that the Huawei P6 is an impressive phone. However, the inaccessible battery, no NFC and the low benchmark scores are some things you'll have to consider when looking at entire package on offer. The positives include the fact that the display is gorgeous and responsive. The camera's performance isn't the best but is suited for casual photographers. The design of the smartphone is slim, sexy and is definitely the first thing you'll notice about the P6. The interface offers a slight learning curve since Android has been completely customised and you may want to get your hands on the phone's interface before buying it.

There's also that higher-resolution front-facing camera to add an extra facet, though whether the beauty effect will be something you'll use without embarrassment is another matter. Still, decent battery life and a reasonable 8MP rear camera mean plenty of boxes are ticked. And above all, this is a phone that costs significantly less than its rivals. It's not as classy as the iPhone 5 and can't take pictures like the HTC One but it's a fun phone. Unless you're dead set on 4G - the phone's biggest omission - it's worth a look.

Considering the P6's modest £380 price, it is a fairly good phone. Featuring a nippy, albeit not cutting-edge, processor, decent screen and solid, but slightly too iPhone-like, design. Its strong points are let down by a host of poor Emotion software additions and poor battery life. For this reason, while we imagine most people will be more than happy with the P6, we can't wholeheartedly recommend it – at least not until Huawei decides to release a version running stock Android.

From what we’ve seen so far, Ascend P6 is full of promise. It’s hard to predict how the final versions of both hardware and software will look like, but if they meet our expectation, it will be great. Even the test version is a very nice smartphone, extremely thin and comfortable to use. Design and ergonomics are merged in the right way, which we’ve especially liked.

There's no escaping the fact that a lot of the Ascend P6 design looks like it's been borrowed from the iPhone 5. With the same flat aluminium sides and rounded corners. Put it in a slip case and you'll easily convince your mates that you've upgraded to an Apple smartphone. The only real differences are the screen size (it's bigger than then iPhone) and the rounded bottom edge. Oh, and it also comes in pink.

The Ascend Mate 2 4G at least does its part by justifying the attention those marketing efforts might generate. The $299 price tag positions it as a phone with half the cost of the average high-end device but possessing specs that are close enough to not frustrate users. In a head-to-head competition with a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 or an LG G3, Huawei's not going to win in any category except price. That might be an advantage for people choosing to pay full price for their handset. The Ascend Mate 2 4G has what's necessary to have a reasonably sound experience if you're not looking for the bleeding edge, and it's better than most phones in its price range. If you want to go big but not spend big, the Ascend Mate 2 4G is a sensible purchase.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with the Huawei Ascend G6, but at the same time not one feature really stands out. Battery life is good as is the overall performance and Huawei is finally learning that design and build quality does matter even on a midrange phone. The problem however is that in the Moto G and the Xperia M2 you have two smartphones that offer the same features for around £50 less.

But Huawei has managed to improve things a bit, with a faster chip and better mobile speeds, both of which help the G6. Is it the phone for you? Well, that depends on what your hands think when they hold it, but if you’re low on cash but want a good bang for your buck, that can totally be found in the Ascend G6.

If my Note 3 stopped working tomorrow I think the Huawei Ascend G7 4G is where my money would be going.

The Huawei Ascend Y550 is currently available for £69 from EE and O2, and at that price it seems a reasonable deal. However, SIM-free you’ll pay up to £110, and at that price it’s awful. If you can afford a £100 phone, you can do much better than the Y550. The Motorola Moto G and EE Kestrel offer a better core experience. Even if you can’t afford that, the Motorola Moto E doesn’t have the same screen compromises as the Huawei Ascend Y550, although it doesn’t have 4G either and offers a much weaker CPU.

I'd still argue that the Moto G (2014) is a better handset overall, though, thanks largely to its superior interface and more up-to-date OS. The Huawei Ascend G620S has such a clunky name that you'll likely forget what it's called by the time you get to your local mobile phone emporium, but if you do come home with one you probably won't be disappointed. You could certainly do a lot worse or spend a lot more money.
