Tricky one this. There’s no denying it, this is an excellent phone when it comes to the cameras, the screen and the GUI. It’s a different form-factor, that’s for sure, but I’m not going to berate them too much for that as there’ll definitely be lots of you out there who will love the tall and almost remote-control-like appearance of this device. However, what I will say is that, in this world of “all screen” phone frontages and multiple use cases, it’s a hard sell for Sony to say, “We’re doing this complete letterbox design because that’s how movies are formatted”. Sure, movies look great on the phone and there’s no black bars, but what about for the rest of the time, when your thumb doesn’t reach high enough and you have to employ one of those work-arounds that Sony has put in place to let you use the phone with one-hand?

After playing fourth or fifth fiddle for the longest time, Sony nails it with the Xperia 10. The performance is solid, the camera is great and the battery life is awesome. The weird 21:9 aspect ratio takes some getting used to but once you start using it you hardly notice it. This is a very good handset from Sony and we're excited to see what the flagship Xperia 1 brings to the table.

For a mid-range device, both the Sony Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus are interesting choices. The 21:9 aspect ratio makes them unique, but I don’t know if it’s enough to make you want to choose these over others in the market. If you were to go with one of these, I’d choose the Xperia 10 Plus over the smaller sibling mainly due to the slightly better specs, larger screen, and better cameras. I really see no reason why the smaller Xperia 10 exists to be honest.

The Sony Xperia 10 was released in February 2019 to little fanfare. Initial excitement for the device’s design was mostly quashed by the confirmation of more of its details — mainly the small 2870 mAh battery, two-year old Snapdragon 630 chipset, and $350 USD MSRP. The phone received almost no coverage by the major YouTube review players (Sony is notoriously poor at community management and marketing), and written reviews were sparse and fairly critical: A 6.0 from DigitalTrends, 3.5/5 from both TechRadar and TrustedReviews, and a withering 2.5/5 from PCMag. However, the Xperia 10 is far and away my favourite smartphone of 2019. Allow me to explain.

Sony hasn’t released a budget phone globally in 2021, but the mid-range Xperia 10 III feels like it should be significantly more affordable. It sticks with a 60Hz display, while most phones shift to 90Hz or even 120Hz. There are still some fairly noticeable bezels too, which definitely aren't to everyone's tastes. The cameras are also extremely patchy, with charging speeds out of the box painfully slow. That’s not to say the Xperia 10 III doesn’t get anything right – far from it. Performance is fine and extends to mobile gaming, while battery life is among the best you’ll find anywhere. It still looks and feels like a premium handset, and the simple software experience is enjoyable. But Sony’s cautious spec sheet and comparatively high price tag means the Xperia 10 III needed to nail the basics. It simply doesn’t do that, making the phone hard to recommend.

The biggest advantages of the reviewed Xperia are the screen, IP65 / 68 certification, Gorilla Glass 6, compact housing and great battery life. However, the device's efficiency and photo quality are at an average level, which, combined with a relatively high price - 430 euros - makes it not a particularly profitable proposition. The biggest competition for this model will be Samsung Galaxy A52 5G, POCO F3, OnePlus Nord and Mi 11 Lite 5G.

Hacsak nem a következő Pókember-filmről van szó, vélhetően az Xperia 10 IV-et sem fogjuk tömegtelefonként látni, akiknek pedig a Sony nyújtotta speciális igényekre van szükségük is inkább nézelődjenek még kicsit a tavalyi modell után, hátha sikerül több tízezret spórolniuk és még töltőt is kapniuk. A kompaktság, kényelmes kezelhetőség, az IP68-as védelem, a 3,5 milliméteres jack, a szép kijelző és a kimagaslóan jó üzemidő az Xperia 10 IV mellett szól idén is, de ezek mind megvannak a 10 III-ban is, ráadásul az igényesebb megjelenéssel, gyorsabb 3.1-es USB porttal és ugyanúgy kimagaslóan közepes kamerás teljesítménnyel vegyíti ezt. Feláras újracsomagolásként lehet beszélni az Xperia 10 IV-ről, hisz a tavalyi modellhez képest gyakorlati előrelépés alig történt, az ár nagyot ugrott felfelé, a tartozékok meg közben elfogytak. Mostanában egyre többet szajkózzuk, hogy jobb lenne az éves generációs frissítések helyett kétévente új modelleket bemutatnia a gyártóknak, a Sony pedig szépen alátámasztotta ezt az Xperia 10 IV-gyel.

The Sony Xperia 10 IV showed outstanding autonomy across all our tests. In default mode, it had one of the longest typical usage scenarios we’ve tested to date, and it had one of the best autonomy results in the on-the-go tests, especially when scrolling on social apps. When tested in calibrated mode, the device performed very well, having excellent autonomy whatever the use case. Charging the device’s large 5000 mAh battery to its full capacity lasted 2 hours and 36 minutes because of the small charger. A 5-minute charge boost only yielded an average 3 hours and 24 minutes of autonomy. The charge efficiency was poor, and the residual consumption of the charger when the device was fully charged and still plugged in was above average. But the efficiency of the charger itself was average, and its residual consumption when the device was not plugged in was very low, consuming very little power from the outlet. When it came to discharge efficiency, the Sony Xperia 10 IV drained very low discharge currents across all our use cases, meaning that the device was well-optimized. Compared to devices from the same price range ($400 – $599), the Sony Xperia 10 IV’s global score places it near the top of the segment, while its autonomy score takes the top spot. The device also has among the best scores in efficiency for the segment. But its very low charging score, pulled down by the lowest full-charge subscore we have in our database so far, kept it from doing better in the segment.

That makes the Xperia 10 IV sound like a hard sell, and for most people, it is. Once again, we're parting ways with an Xperia 10 not knowing what to make of it. It's expensive for what its specs suggest, and the phone-only box contents don't help make you feel you're getting your money's worth either. The lack of 4K video recording when the previous installment supported it is an odd consequence of the 5G times we live in, but we reckon it could have been avoided with a different choice of chipset, which would have also improved performance numbers. The fact that the display only supports 60Hz refresh rate is inexcusable at this point, and stereo speakers have all but become the norm even in the upper midrange and the 10 IV misses out on those as well. It's not without its strong points, though, the Mark 4. Unrivaled, almost excessive battery life is the first that comes to mind, and having that in a package as light and compact as this tall 6-incher is certainly going to be enough to attract a whole bunch of buyers. As usual, that body is also dust and water-sealed - a notch better than most, even.

And up there there are a lot of nice phones to consider. It also seems that all Xperia models have contracted the same illness characterized with a raise in price rather than in temperature. Whether or not it will prove problematic or potentially incurable, only time will tell.

The Sony Xperia 10 V offers quite a nice set of features, considering its price. The camera app includes a night mode, auto HDR, and a background blur feature, but it would benefit from additional shooting modes. It feels like Sony are still playing catch up in the mobile phone market, as Apple, Samsung, Google, and others have additional computational shooting modes (such as long exposure). How about the images produced, are they any good? Well, sometimes. In good light, the cameras can product some really good looking images, and colour can be good. At other times, colour is dull. As light levels drop image quality also drops dramatically. There’s also a lack of consistency between shots, in exposure and colour reproduction, so it is often a case of picking the best of several shots to get a good one. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to see why anyone would choose this phone over a Samsung, Google Pixel, or any of the other brands available. There are too many things on this phone that simply aren’t competitive with what’s out there.

Looking at the results based on my review, I do not understand why other reviewers give the Xperia 10 V such high scores. Okay, Sony impressed me in terms of build quality and included features like a microSD slot and a 3.5 mm headphone jack untouched. And yes, the Xperia 10 V fills an exciting niche with its lightweight form factor and 21:9 screen format. However, the Xperia 10 V is disappointing for a phone that resides in the $500 range. That is not my personal opinion, but the result of a quick look at the competition. The triple camera left much to be desired with its tiny sensors, both during the day and at night. The limited video resolution of 1080p is also a relic from older times. The phone looks just as antiquated in terms of quick-charging as well as the display, which has a maximum refresh rate of 60 Hz.

In such conditions, still images had a good level of detail and pleasant colors. However, image quality suffered in more challenging situations, for example, with motion in the scene or backlit subjects, where our testers observed a lack of detail, exposure issues and various unwanted image artifacts. Despite dedicated ultra-wide and tele cameras, the Sony’s zoom capabilities were fairly limited, with a lack of detail and a limited dynamic range that resulted in highlight clipping across the entire zoom range. Video quality lagged behind stills. While in bright light, colors were nice, there was a lack of detail as well as exposure instabilities in pretty much all recording conditions. Video stabilization was ineffective, too, resulting in noticeable camera shake.

The Xperia 10 V is a great budget phone. It perfects an already great formula, adding stereo speakers, a brighter display, a slightly better main camera, and keeping the same stunning battery life in a very compact and lightweight package. There are some omissions worth pointing out, though. The 60 Hz display refresh rate is a thing of the past, even on budget phones. The side-mounted fingerprint reader could use some R&D work, and the price tag is pushing things a bit. The Snapdragon 695 is getting old now, and the lack of 4K video recording and streaming is another blow to the Xperia 10 V. But overall, if you like the Xperia aesthetics and the 21:9 screen, don't care about refresh rates, and you need a "Mo Farah" rather than a "Usain Bolt", this phone is a great option.

Once again, not a lot has changed going from the Xperia 10 IV and even the 10 III to the new Xperia 10 V. That's both a good and a bad thing. If you are a fan of the iconic thin and tall, extra light design on the phone, there is just nothing else out there in the midrange space to offer an alternative. Similarly, the 21:9 display aspect ratio remains a pretty exclusive spotlight feature. Let's start with some positives first. The Xperia 10 V finally has a stereo speaker setup and a pretty good one at that - front-facing, well-balanced and decently loud, with a clean output. Making a return - the great ingress protection rating is hard to come by in the midranger space.
