The taller display gives you more room to work and requires you to scroll less through lengthy documents and long web pages. Lenovo also tweaked the display hinge, expanded the touchpad, improved the positioning of the laptop’s speakers, and integrated the fingerprint reader into the power button. Inside, the laptop received the expected Intel update to the chipmaker’s 11th-gen Tiger Lake chips. With its roomier display and other improvements, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon remains a top choice for business execs, even if its webcam is behind the times.

Apart from the dim screen (and the lack of an option brighter than 500 nits, when a number of business models now offer 1,000-nit options), the still-slightly-cramped touchpad, and the squeaky keyboard, I have very few complaints about this X1 Carbon. Its price is quite high, of course, so those nitpicks still do give me some pause. Lenovo’s new additions — particularly the 16:10 screen and the upward-firing speakers — are absolutely welcome, and they make the X1 Carbon Gen 9 unquestionably the best iteration of this device so far. It’s a formula Lenovo has perfected to a tee, combining the ThinkPad line’s world-class engineering with exactly the tweaks it needed to stay excellent in the modern market. While the X1 Carbon isn’t the best value for consumers, any deep-pocketed business shopper should give it a look.

Overall the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 is a solid mid-range laptop that’s perfectly suited for the average working person. Its performance all around is great, with an excellent battery and ventilation. It also has remarkably good speakers, especially when you consider its size. However, the webcam quality is average and the display is also a bit disappointing, as you can get competitive laptops that deliver more pixels at a higher brightness than the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 for roughly the same price. The Dell XPS 15, for example, can be configured with a gorgeous OLED display and competitive specs for roughly $2,400, which isn’t much more than what you’d pay for a kitted-out ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9. Still, it’s hard to beat a Lenovo ThinkPad when you want something that’s built for business. If you want an ultraportable with a comfy keyboard, good speakers and excellent battery life, this is a great choice.

I’m digging the Privacy Guard panel, but there are UHD and regular FHD options too. The big deal is that the screen is bigger without having to make a bigger chassis. There’s also a larger touchpad, which I have mixed feelings on. I do love any time a touchpad gets bigger, but it really highlights the physical buttons and how much room they take up. LENOVO'S X1 CARBON is one of the best laptops you can buy. At 2.5 pounds, it's lightweight, thin, and very portable. It offers plenty of power for most tasks, all-day battery life, and—unlike its competition—plenty of ports for all of your accessories. We're reviewed the Linux version of the X1 Carbon last year, and everything in this review applies to the updated version of the machine too. The main change to the 2021 X1 Carbon is the move to 11th-generation Intel processors. Oh, and the new, slightly taller screen, which now has a 16:10 aspect ratio, just like the Dell XPS 13.

As things slowly get back to normal (depending on where you live) we are travelling more, working from coffee shops, and much more. With this I have been looking for a thin and light laptop that will serve my needs. While I have a massive 17-inch gaming laptop it is not the easiest to travel with and forget taking it down to the local coffee shop! I just want something that I can easily throw in my backpack, is not all that heavy, and can handle my daily needs of running this website as well as photo and video editing. Enter the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9, a 14-inch thin and light laptop with a carbon fiber and magnesium alloy chassis that weights in at only around 2.5 lbs! Lenovo sent us over the 20XW004DUS model which features an Intel Core i7-1165G7, 16GB DDR4-4267 memory (soldered), a 512GB NVMe SSD, and a 14-inch 1920 x 1200 IPS display. Let’s take a look and see what the new Gen 9 ThinkPad X1 Carbon is all about!

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon has never failed to impress. Now, the 9th generation of this product brings a display with a higher aspect ratio, resulting in more content able to be shown vertically. What this means is that data analysts, and developers will be happy. However, there is a downside to having such a display – battery life. Unfortunately, the laptop lasts for 9 hours of Web browsing, or 6 hours and a half of video playback. The latter is half the score we got from the 8th Gen ThinkPad X1 Carbon with a 1080p display. Nevertheless, arguably the biggest improvement year on year is the performance. Comparing Tiger Lake chips to Comet Lake-U CPUs is pointless in 2022, but still, you get a good amount of processing and graphics power inside one of the most compact business laptops on the market. There is one unfortunate thing, though – the memory is soldered to the motherboard. On the other hand, you can’t expect it to be different at 14.9mm. And to be fair, Lenovo offers options of up to 32GB of LPDDR4x RAM, working in quad-channel mode.
