The Acer Aspire S3 isn't a top performer in any category, but it's an interesting splicing of an Ultrabook and a less portable laptop with its hybrid hard drive and dedicated GPU. It's a combo that works too, but the disappointing battery life will certainly put off a few potential buyers.

Business travellers who spend most of their time on the road may prefer a laptop with greater battery life and connectivity. Yet the Aspire S3 is still attractive, lightweight, and provides good performance for a lower price than many of its Ultrabook rivals. The battery life leaves room for improvement, but the Aspire S3 will still earn its keep for presentations and other tasks that require good graphics performance and a high-quality display.

The Acer Aspire S3 has a lot going for it, including an attractive, slimline design and high-quality IPS display. It also provides good performance for an Ultrabook in this price range, thanks to its hybrid storage drive and nVidia graphics. Battery life was respectable rather than outstanding, and some people might prefer to trade features such as the touch-screen and nVidia GPU for a longer-lasting battery.

The Acer Aspire S3 is an Ultrabook that doesn't aim for superlative performance in any area, but instead balances the price-to-power ratio better than many competitors out there. It gives a decent performance, there's a good screen (despite reflective qualities) and thanks to dedicated graphics there's even a bit of gaming cred for a price that won't send those on a strict budget scurrying back to having to buy a chunky laptop.

The Acer Aspire S3 is a huge improvement on its predecessor. It’s expensive, but it’s easily one of the best value Core i5 Ultrabooks currently available. You certainly get much more for your money than the Acer Aspire S7 and we think it’s much more comfortable to use. We’re certainly not happy with the phantom screen taps that occasionally occurred when we moved the screen, and there were some very minor flaws with the keyboard. However, these issues aren’t enough to detract from a stunning design, powerful hardware and a great display.
